Get the right start as a new grad RN or Fellow with Providence Swedish.
The right start
Our RN Residency/Fellowship Program provides you with everything you need to transition from school to the hospital floor. We offer a wide range of learning tracks with integrated classroom, simulation and clinical experiences under the guidance and support of preceptors.
Great benefits start the same day you do, and relocation assistance is offered to RN Residents living outside of Washington State. Applications are accepted prior to receiving your RN license.
RN Residents will:
- Transition from entry-level advanced beginner to competent professional nurse in the clinical environment.
- Develop effective decision-making skills related to clinical judgement and performance.
- Develop strategies to incorporate research-based and other evidence into practice.
- Implement clinical leadership skills at the point of patient care.
- Practice collaboratively as members of the inter-professional healthcare team.
- Formulate an individual career plan that promotes a life-long commitment to professional nursing.
RN Residents
- Graduation from an ADN, BSN or entry-level Master's in Nursing program
- Have less than 1 year of RN nursing experience at the start of the Residency cohort
- Active, unencumbered Washington RN license upon hire
- Active American Heart Association BLS card upon hire
RN Fellows
- Active, unencumbered Washington RN license upon hire
- Active American Heart Association BLS card upon hire
- 1 or more years of RN experience
The first program phase for Residents and Fellows includes:
- An evidence-based curriculum grounded in adult learning theory and using flipped classroom methodology
- Interactive simulations
- 2 (or more) shifts on the unit every week with a preceptor, where you will apply your knowledge and develop your skills and workflow
- Instructional and 1:1 evaluation support by our team of Professional Development Specialists
Orientation continues on the unit with a preceptor for the full FTE until the Resident or Fellow can independently care for a typical assignment at a typical acuity level.
Expected orientation time can vary by specialty and location.
Continued support after orientation:
- Transition to Practice online classes, where you can connect and collaborate with other RN Residents, throughout the first year
- Development of an evidence-based practice project to showcase at the completion of the program
Providence Swedish is committed to your ongoing professional development by offering a mentorship program, explorative learning, and continuing education opportunities.
How does the hiring process and timeline work?
Human resources will post the available resident positions prior to the projected start date. If selected, human resources will call and schedule you for a telephone screening interview. If successful with the HR Interview process, you will be scheduled for an interview with the manager for your area of interest. The interview process with managers varies, and you should be prepared to meet with a panel of your peers in addition to the unit manager.
Not all applications will be accepted in the first round of reviews, but be assured they will be reviewed manually while the application is open.
How many hours per week do residents work?
This is a full time position that requires 72-80 hours per two week pay period including nights, weekends and holidays. The number of hours worked per week can vary to accommodate education time and simulation experiences; and you will likely follow your preceptor's schedule for unit clinical time.
Will I be working nights, weekends and holidays?
Nurse residents are full time employees. Your schedule may include nights, evenings; and will include weekends and holidays.
Do I get vacation time during my residency?
Residents receive the same vacation, paid holidays and sick leave allowances as other contractual nurses. Vacation may not be used until completion of six months of service. As Residency is an intensive program time off or scheduling requests during orientation are not accommodated.
Am I obligated to stay at Providence Swedish after the completion of my Residency?
We do require that you stay at Providence Swedish for two years after completion of your orientation. If desired, you may have the ability to move to another unit through the Fellow program after one year.
