Megan, Ultrasound Technologist
Megan started her ultrasound education expecting to focus on obstetric imaging every day. Instead, she discovered a specialty full of variety, complexity and continuous learning. After earning a bachelor's in diagnostic medical sonography and completing an externship, she applied to only Providence Swedish, saying, “There was no other option for me.”
We don't just take pictures and send them off. We know what we're looking at, and we write in-depth reports for the radiologists.
What drew you to ultrasound and to Providence?
Initially, I went to school to be a nurse, then decided that wasn't really for me. I wanted to be in medicine and came across medical imaging. There are so many wonderful things about Providence Swedish—the people, the environment. They truly care about the people they're taking care of and that is so obvious through everybody who works here.
What is your favorite type of scan?
I love vascular because there are a million reasons we could be doing it so it's kind of like a problem you have to solve. It's complex but typically, we're looking to see if a lack of blood flow to the area is causing symptoms for a patient. It could be somebody who's struggling with perfusion or they're not getting blood flow to an extremity. That's one of the main reasons we would do an arm or leg ultrasound for a vascular purpose. We also recently started doing transcranial dopplers, which is where we assess the blood flow in the brain.
What makes your ultrasound team special?
I could say so many wonderful things about my team. Our managers are great. They're so supportive. They actually listen to us, and they understand the hard aspects of ultrasound and the help we need. My teammates are wonderful. We rely on each other quite a bit for second opinions. We run into things every day that we've never seen before, and it's so nice to have a well-rounded team that is always there to help. Truly, they make working here so fun.
