Tosh, Lead MRI Technologist

Tosh spent several years figuring out his path, starting as a CNA before moving to patient transport, where he interacted with imaging techs who always seemed to be enjoying their work. He became an imaging assistant in both CT and MRI, then went through X-ray school with the support of Providence's tuition reimbursement program. Today, he's a lead MRI technologist and one of the department's MRI Safety Officers.

I get to just give all my attention to one person. You're my only patient right now.

What drew you into imaging at Providence Swedish?

Providence Swedish really supported my path into imaging. While I was working here, they helped me move into a part-time role in the file room that made me eligible for tuition reimbursement so I could go to X-ray school. I honestly don't know if I could've afforded it otherwise, so that financial support helped me turn my goals into reality.

What do you love about working in MRI specifically?

I get to just focus on the person in front of me. In MRI, that person is my only patient while they're with me. And because MRI exams can run anywhere from 13 minutes to three-plus hours, you're building a real rapport. I used to be pretty claustrophobic going into MRIs myself, so I have a lot of empathy for patients who are nervous about it. Spending an extra five minutes to reassure someone, get them settled, and make them feel safe, that matters.

What makes your MRI department unique?

We serve patients across the hospital, in the ER, ICU, inpatient, outpatient and pre-surgical departments. We meet all of those needs in one place. We're also one of the only facilities in four counties where patients with implanted pacemakers or defibrillators can safely get an MRI. There's a whole group of patients who come only to us for that reason.
