Karen, Wound Ostomy RN
Karen always knew she wanted to be a nurse. Growing up, she was inspired by her mother, who was also a nurse, and loved hearing her stories after work. Over time, Karen developed a passion for wound care. When she joined Swedish, she pursued her certification as an ostomy nurse, combining her love for wound care with ostomy care. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to do both,” she says. “I can see myself in this role at Providence Swedish for years to come.”
There are a lot of different opportunities, a lot of paths you can take, a lot of room for growth in your career. Providence Swedish is a great place to work.
What’s it like working with other nurses at Providence Swedish?
The nurses on my floor are wonderful. When you call for help, they all come running. I feel very valued by them, and I very much value them. Together, all the resources give a patient the best care possible.
How does Providence Swedish support their caregivers’ careers?
Providence Swedish gives a lot of opportunities to their caregivers. There is always room to move into a different role or to move up. I’m lucky that Providence Swedish supports me in growing my education for my role. They encourage us to go to conferences so we can stay up on evidence-based practice for our role in wound and ostomy.
What’s a great day at work for you?
A great day is when I know I’ve made a difference in a patient’s life—whether it’s recommending a wound care treatment plan, providing post-op ostomy education, or simply making someone more comfortable with a warm blanket or a cup of ice. Seeing a patient smile, knowing they feel more at ease and have a clear discharge plan, is incredibly rewarding.
