Niki, Supervisor, Clinical Care; Intensive Care Unit

Niki’s grandmother was an IV nurse at Providence, Swedish’s parent organization, and hearing her talk about how proud she was of her profession made her granddaughter want to follow in her footsteps.

I found my home at Swedish pretty quickly. I started as an ICU resident, and I was welcomed. It became my family. When I went to have my first child at Swedish, the first person I called was my mentor on the unit. I always felt protected, whether in the hospital or not.

What do you like most about your role?

I really enjoy the critical thinking required for the role and the many opportunities to grow and learn. I’m constantly challenged, which I like, learning new things all the time.

What keeps you at Swedish?

I love the people that I work for and with. What gets me through the difficult days is knowing why I’m here and being able to contribute to the overall quality of care we provide to patients. I wake up eager to start the day, knowing that I’m helping make our unit the best it can be. That’s what keeps me at Swedish.

How do you help new and Fellow nurses succeed?

A big part of my job right now is supporting new graduate nurses and our Fellow ICU nurses that are coming into the unit. I have a passion for being able to teach and help new nurses. I really want to provide the environment for them that I felt when I started here.
